A subwoofer has to be in a box. Each subwoofer comes with its own subwoofer specifications. Meaning each subwoofer needs to be installed in its correct size box. for instance some boxes require a 1 cu. ft. box. Some subwoofers require a 3 cu. ft. ported box. The shallow woofers usually require a small box. Less than 1 cu. ft. You can also make these boxes rectangular. Depending on your budget you can have a custom made box fit where you need it to fit in the trunk. I would recomend keeping your spare, putting your golf clubs in the trunk and see where and how much room you have. If you measure for me I can help you out. Also putting the box under the carpet is going to make the woofer sound really poor. I can help you with subwoofer, box and amp selection. I am really big into spl and sq systems. Mike
